The Ancient Olive Groves of Eumelia - Tastings with Olive Oil Sommeliers
Eumelia’s owner, Frangiskos Karelas and his wife, Marliena, recently received formal training from the Kalamata Olive Oil Taste Laboratory Technological Educational Institute of Peloponnese, and became certified olive oil sommeliers. They wish to impart their knowledge about the nuances and intricacies of this essential part of Greek culture to guide guests through the process from picking olives to oil pressing and tasting.
The 2,000 year old ancient olive groves are an integral part of Eumelia’s bio-dynamic farm and need minimal influence from humans. The entire process is organic with no chemical, pesticides, hormones or fertilizers used, thus giving a final product that is healthy while protecting the land. Frangiskos has created a farm that is poly-cultural with a biodynamic olive grove including grapes, almonds, pine trees, cypresses trees along with wild herbs and edible greens that grow naturally. This abundance of positive characteristics influence the quality of the farm’s olives, making it rich in nutrients. The olives at Eumelia were analyzed by the institute, and were proved to be high in polyphenols (which helps prevent cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes).
Eumelia makes and bottles its own olive oil that is pressed using an organic certified olive mill retaining the nutrients and other beneficial qualities from these ancient trees.
